Lazio make club history as AC Milan drop points against Sassuolo in Serie A

Lazio moved level on points with Serie A leaders Inter Milan after beating Monza 3-1, while AC Milan were held to a 1-1 draw by Sassuolo.

The results kept Lazio firmly in the title race and extended Milan's unbeaten start to the league season, although the Rossoneri missed the chance to claim all three points.

Lazio beat 10-man Monza to set club record

Lazio made history by winning five of their opening six Serie A matches for the first time, securing a 3-1 victory over Monza at the Stadio Olimpico.

The hosts took the lead after just three minutes when Nuno Tavares unleashed a powerful left-footed strike from 25 yards into the top-right corner.

Lazio doubled their advantage in the 23rd minute. Tavares delivered an accurate ball into the penalty area, where Gustav Isaksen found space to finish first time with his left foot.

Monza briefly thought they had reduced the deficit earlier in the first half, but Gustavo Varela's close-range effort was ruled out for offside.

The visitors' task became even harder 10 minutes before the break when Lorenzo Lucchesi received a straight red card for bringing down Tijjani Noslin, who was through on goal.

Despite playing with 10 men, Monza responded impressively after half-time. They pulled a goal back just 45 seconds into the second half when Saba Goglichidze headed home from close range following a corner.

Monza then threatened to complete a remarkable comeback. Samuele Birindelli sent an effort narrowly wide before Varela's shot took a deflection and flew over the crossbar.

Lazio struggled to contain their opponents' attacking threat after the break but eventually secured the victory in the closing minutes.

Substitute Andrea Pinamonti finished from Alfonso Pedraza's square pass to make it 3-1 and settle the contest.

The result extended Lazio's unbeaten Serie A record against Monza to seven matches. Lazio climbed to second place, level on points with leaders Inter Milan, while Monza remained 15th.

AC Milan maintain unbeaten Serie A run

AC Milan extended their unbeaten start to the Serie A season but had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Sassuolo.

The result also continued Sassuolo's impressive recent record against Milan, with the home side now unbeaten in four consecutive meetings, recording one win and three draws.

The first half offered few clear-cut chances, although Milan finished the opening period strongly.

Goncalo Ramos tested Sassuolo goalkeeper Arijanet Muric from a tight angle before forcing another save with a header. Muric then denied Diego Moreira and reacted well to keep out a Strahinja Pavlovic header in stoppage time.

Sassuolo had their opportunities after the interval, with Mike Maignan stopping a close-range effort from Vasilije Adzic in the 59th minute.

Milan gradually gained control and broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Luka Modric threaded a precise pass through the defence for Adrien Rabiot, who fired past Muric from a difficult angle.

However, the visitors' lead lasted only five minutes.

Sassuolo drew level when Armand Lauriente delivered a low corner that caused confusion inside the Milan penalty area. The ball eventually fell to Cas Odenthal, who finished from close range to score his second goal of the season.

Both sides pushed for a late winner, with Muric producing another save to deny Alphadjo Cisse.

Sassuolo thought they had scored again towards the end, but Kristian Thorstvedt's finish was ruled out for a foul.

The draw ended Sassuolo's perfect home record in the league this season, while Milan remained unbeaten across their opening six Serie A matches for the first time since 2022.
