Late drama unfolds as Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen share points

In a thrilling Bundesliga encounter, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen played out a dramatic 2-2 draw.

The match began with Bayern dominating the opening 20 minutes, with Harry Kane heading home a corner kick in the 7th minute. However, Leverkusen fought back, and Alex Grimaldo's free-kick goal levelled the score. The second half witnessed a momentum shift, with Leverkusen gaining the upper hand.

In the 86th minute, Leon Goretzka put Bayern ahead with a crucial goal, seemingly securing a vital three points for the Rekordmeister. But in the dying moments of stoppage time, the game took a stunning turn.

Alphonso Davies was penalized for a foul on Leverkusen's Jonas Hofmann, allowing Exequiel Palacios to convert the penalty and salvage a point for Die Werkself.

The pivotal moment saw referee Daniel Schlager initially miss the foul but, after VAR intervention, he overturned his decision, awarding Leverkusen a penalty.

Thomas Tuchel, Bayern's manager, expressed his disagreement with the decision after the match, stating, "The referee didn't blow his whistle. For me, it is not a crystal clear wrong decision where VAR had to intervene."

Schlager defended his decision, explaining, "At first, I didn't notice it on the pitch. Then the information came from the video assistant that there was a very clear hit on the foot, on the calf. Davies hit Hofmann on his foot, calf”therefore, there was a penalty."

The decision sparked debate, as it appeared to set a precedent for consistency. An earlier incident involving Jamal Musiala, who was fouled by Edmond Tapsoba in the box, went unnoticed.

Many argued that, based on the Hofmann decision, Musiala should have been awarded a penalty. Additionally, had Tapsoba received a second yellow card for the foul, he would have been sent off.

The late-game drama and controversial decisions kept fans talking long after the final whistle.
