Lack of goals from Kaizer Chiefs’ set plays concerns Given Msimango

Kaizer Chiefs centre-back Given Msimango says the goal-scoring problems in the team don’t only rest with the attackers but the whole team including the defenders, especially when it comes to set plays.

Answering questions from the media at the club’s base in Naturena yesterday, Msimango acknowledged that Chiefs have not fared well in executing set plays offensively.

Defensively Chiefs have done well in their last six matches, keeping five clean shits but Msimango believes that they could have still done better with their set-pieces.

"It's not all bad from our player's perspective when we look at our season holistically in terms of the past few games that we've played. I think in the last six games we conceded one goal, that shows that the level of consistency in terms of how we play and how we defend," Msimango said.

"We just need to put the ball in the back of the net, which is something that strikers are working on and midfielders, together as defenders because we are not contributing as much as we should be in terms of our set pieces and all those other aspects of the game.

"So, it's a team effort, it's a collective effort, things will get better and we will be where we deserve to be at the end of the season."

Chiefs have now failed to register a win in their last three matches, and this has attracted some criticism for the current squad, especially from some legends of the club.

These legends believe that some current players are not worthy of pulling on the heavy Amakhosi jersey.

Msimango says the best way to respond to these comments is to produce improved performances.

"With those statements going around the media, of course everyone is entitled to an opinion. They say this because they've done so well for the club in recent years. We respect that as players,” Msimango said.

“We've come to an understanding that when you play for such a massive institution, you receive a lot of criticism when things are not going well when you are not performing well which is understandable because you have to perform at Kaizer. You have to bring results when you play for Kaizer Chiefs.

“So, we understand where they're coming from and we understand the disappointment from the way that they're speaking in the media but all we ask for is to maintain the hope. To maintain the belief in the current crop of players, it's a new generation.

“We bring different skill sets to this club and unfortunately right now it may not seem so because results are not forthcoming but when you look at our league performances, they speak for themselves.

“I feel in that aspect we've been doing very well as a team in terms of keeping those clean sheets and it's one big positive from my side that I've picked up and we can build on that and fix up every other area of our game that we need to fix up and continue improving as a team."
