La Liga wrap: Real Madrid suffer shock defeat, Valencia drop points at home

Real Madrid lost ground to La Liga leaders Barcelona on Sunday after an unexpected home defeat, while Valencia were held to a 1-1 draw by Sevilla.

Real Madrid 0-2 Celta Vigo

Real Madrid suffered a shocking home defeat, with Celta Vigo securing their first league win at the Bernabeu in 19 years.

Half-time substitute Williot Swedberg was the hero, scoring a sublime back-heel flick in the 54th minute and sealing the win in stoppage time.

An implosion saw Real Madrid finish the game with nine men after Fran Garcia and Alvaro Carreras both received red cards, leaving the hosts four points behind league leaders Barcelona.

Valencia 1-1 Sevilla

A late equalizer for Valencia salvaged a point at the Mestalla against rivals Sevilla. Sevilla took the lead in the 58th minute through a Cesar Tarrega own-goal.

The visitors looked set to claim all three points until Valencia striker Hugo Duro snatched a dramatic leveller in the third minute of stoppage time, extending his side's unbeaten run in La Liga to four games. The draw does little for either team's mid-table position.

Espanyol 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

Espanyol continued their strong form with a narrow 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano, lifting them into the top half of the table.

The winning goal came in the first half from Roberto Fernandez, who coolly converted a penalty kick.

The game saw both sides finish with ten men; Rayo's Unai López was dismissed in the 64th minute, and Espanyol's Tyrhys Dolan followed in the 87th. The win marks a third consecutive victory for Espanyol.

Elche 3-0 Girona

Elche dominated relegation rivals Girona with a convincing 3-0 home win to boost their survival hopes.

German Valera opened the scoring in the 40th minute, and the match was effectively sealed by a quick second-half brace from striker Rafa Mir.

Mir netted in the 51st and 57th minutes, capitalizing on quick transitions and defensive errors from the visitors. The emphatic result pulls Elche out of the bottom three.
