Khedira praises record breaking World Cup crowds

Yesterday, the 2026 FIFA World Cup made history during the Ecuador and Germany game in New York as the tournament attendance surpassed the previous record of 3,587,538 fans at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

It was in the stadium where FIFA recognised fan number 3,587,539 on the pitch alongside FIFA Legend and ambassador Sami Khedira.

"When you see the number of people attending I have to say it's absolutely amazing. The stadiums are full and it really feels like all the nations are coming together - it's incredible."

After all the four matches yesterday, there’s no doubt that the records have now gone over 3,7 million in terms of attendance. The US has always been seen as the country that only appreciates American Football and Basketball, but Khedira, the former Real Madrid midfielder, talks about the power of football...

"You can see how powerful football is because there was a lot of discussion before the tournament, but people clearly want to celebrate football in Mexico, Canada and in the USA. You can see the importance of the game just by looking at the fans."
