Kaizer Chiefs lose final game at home to Cape Town City

Kaizer Chiefs ended their season with a wimper with a 1-0 defeat at home to Cape Town City.

Amakhosi needed a win to end the season in fourth place on the DStv Premiership standings but dropped to fifth on the final day as Mduduzi Mdantsane netted on nine minutes.

They were also unable to get their way back in the tie despite playing with an extra man since the 34th minute after Taariq Fielies saw red for the Citizens.

The away side were on the attack from the off with Khanyisa Mayo testing Chiefs stopper Itumeleng Khune with a header on target on just seven minutes.

And City were ahead just minutes later as Mduduzi Mdantsane found the back of the net after picking up a good pass from Fielies.

Mdantsane came close again with a header from a Darwin Gonzalez delivery while Chiefs' first chance of the tie came via a Yusuf Maart shot that was easily saved.

Mayo was a constant threat but was wide with a looping header on 16 minutes as Thabo Nodada saw his goalbound effort kept out by Darren Keet in the City goal.

Both sides played positive football in search of a goal while Fielies was dismissed for a foul on Ashley Du Preez with ten minutes of the first half remaining.

Amakhosi looked to take advantage of the extra man but were unable to find a breakthrough in the first half.

Chiefs bombarded their opponents after the break and Siyethemba Sithebe was as close as anyone to finding a breakthrough, with his header on 50 minutes.

Gonzalez thought he had a second for City but was inches wide with his effort, while try as they might, the home team were unable to find an equaliser at the FNB Stadium and had to settle for defeat on the final day of the season as City pipped them for fourth.
