Kaizer Chiefs focus fully on Marumo Gallants

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma has dismissed talk that they might be going into their Betway Premiership game against Marumo Gallants this weekend with one eye on the upcoming two Soweto derbies.

Amakhosi drew 0-0 with Chippa United last weekend, just six days after shocking Mamelodi Sundowns in a cup match.

Bvuma says they give as much effort in the less popular games as they do against their biggest rivals.

“I don’t think that played a part in our minds because we know the importance of the game that we’re gonna play over the weekend. We know that we need points. We know that we are not in a position where we would like to finish at the end of the season and also we know that us winning the so-called small games or not playing against a bigger team, we know the importance of it because it can take us higher up in the league,” Bvuma said.

“I wouldn’t say that our players are focused on the derby at the moment because right now every game is like a final for us. Marumo, when we win, we know we get the momentum going into the next game. We know we get the maximum points that we need in order for us to finish better in the league.”

The league derby on 03 May was sold out two weeks before the match, but Bvuma says as much as every player wants to be a part of that, they do not take their more immediate task against the Bloemfontein side lightly.

“For me, I don’t think as players we choose games, whereby like, okay I want to perform in this game because it’s regarded as a big game and then the next one I’m gonna relax, I don’t have to perform,” he added.

“I don’t think it’s that. For me, I wouldn’t say it’s mentality, I think it’s something that we need to work as a team to fix. We need to fix the way we prepare ourselves for the so-called small games because one thing for sure is that every player wants to play the big games.

”You can see the preparations and how they carry themselves throughout the week, so I don’t think it has anything to do with mentality but we as a team, as players, we need to make sure that we look at the steps that we do when going to the big games and we should also apply the same things.”
