Julian Schuster: Freiburg need 'self-belief' to beat DFB Cup holders Stuttgart

SC Freiburg will look to carry their recent momentum into Thursday's DFB Cup semi-final clash with holders VfB Stuttgart, as they chase a place in only their second domestic cup final.

Julian Schuster's side arrive in confident mood after securing back-to-back Bundesliga victories for the first time this calendar year.

A 2-1 win over Heidenheim on Matchday 30 followed a narrow 1-0 success against Mainz 05, underlining a timely return to form ahead of a crucial fixture.

Despite that momentum, Freiburg face a stern test. Stuttgart's attacking output has been formidable this season, with 62 Bundesliga goals - a tally bettered only by Bayern Munich's 109.

Schuster acknowledged the threat posed by their opponents, while also delivering a measured and composed pre-match assessment.

The Freiburg coach emphasised that self-belief and discipline will be essential if his side are to overturn the 1-0 defeat they suffered in the sides' previous meeting on Matchday 20.

He also stressed the importance of focusing on their own style of play rather than becoming preoccupied with Stuttgart's strengths.

"It will be a tough challenge, but one we are approaching with plenty of self-belief," said Schuster.

"It is hugely important to have the discipline to carry out what you have worked on in your game plan.

"That creates situations where you can take control of the game and dictate it. Both teams are very good at that.

"Of course, we'll need a performance where we are at our best in many areas, and we also have to accept that the opposition have their qualities. There will be moments when we have to be ready to suffer."
