Inspired by Pitso, Arendse's coaching career takes off

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Wayne Arendse is following in the footsteps of his former mentor Pitso Mosimane as a coach.

Arendse, who was part of Mosimane’s all-conquering team since joining the Brazilians in 2012, says the Al Ahli Saudi coach is an inspiration to him.

"I keep looking at Pitso Mosimane, he keeps doing different courses. He learns about the game. Recently he got awarded with his Pro A-Licence if I'm not mistaken. That's what it's about, you've got to learn about the game and there's always new developments, new tactics and even new laws coming into the game as well," Arendse said.

"So, there's always room for improvement, always room to learn. That's why we are here, it's just encouraging to see the coaches that are also here and the former players as well. We are all in the same group and we are all learning together.

“When I started working with Coach Pitso, I realised that the guy doesn't sleep, he keeps working. He's always looking for new ideas, new methods and that's how you become a top coach and that's why he's where he is today,

"He keeps trying to learn new things, he's always trying to be ahead of the game and that's what it's about. Coaching is about coming up with new ideas and new tactics, so you can only learn from the guys that are on top."

The 2016 CAF Champions League winner has begun his coaching career with Highlands Park in the Gauteng Development League. He says he is enjoying the space.

"I'm active, I'm coaching under-19's at Highlands Park in the Junior League. I've been there for about a season now and yes, it's going well. I'm enjoying the coaching side of things, I'm looking forward to giving it a good run,

Our league is very competitive but that's where you want to be, you want to be in the highest league in your division. Whether it's u19s or u17s but you want to play in the highest league and learn,” he explained.

“I'm obviously trying to rub of my experience to the youngsters hence I'm here because I don't know everything. That's why I came to learn, so with the knowledge I get here, I'll just take it back to the youngsters and just encourage them as well," he concluded.
