History-making Cape Verde power into World Cup knockouts with Spain

Spain completed the group stage with a narrow 1-0 victory over Uruguay, while Cape Verde created history by reaching the knockout rounds in their first appearance at the tournament following a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia. 

Uruguay and Saudi Arabia were both eliminated after failing to win a match in the group.

Cape Verde Make History Despite Saudi Stalemate

Cape Verde celebrated a landmark achievement after a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia was enough to send the Blue Sharks into the knockout stages.

Saudi Arabia knew only a victory would keep their qualification hopes alive, but both sides struggled to break each other down in a cautious opening. Neither team managed a shot in the opening 15 minutes as both defended deep and waited for opportunities.

Cape Verde created the better chances before the break. Willy Semedo forced Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais into a smart save from the edge of the area before firing a volley wide shortly afterwards.

With Spain leading Uruguay in the other Group H match, Cape Verde remained on course for second place. They nearly strengthened their position early in the second half when Jamiro Monteiro was played through after a flowing passing move, but Al-Owais comfortably gathered his low effort.

Saudi Arabia rarely threatened in attack and were unable to find the goal they desperately needed. Cape Verde almost snatched victory with the final kick of the game, but Nuno da Costa glanced his header wide.

The draw gave Cape Verde a second clean sheet of the tournament and ensured they became only the third African nation to progress from the group stage without defeat in their debut World Cup appearance. They will now face reigning world champions Argentina in the Round of 32 in Miami.

Spain Finish Top as Uruguay Bow Out

Spain secured top spot in Group H with a 1-0 victory over Uruguay, condemning the South Americans to another disappointing group-stage exit.

Spain made the brighter start, with Mikel Oyarzabal testing Uruguay's defence inside the opening minutes. However, chances remained limited until just before half-time.

The decisive moment came in the 42nd minute when Lamine Yamal found Alex Baena, whose low shot slipped through the hands of Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to hand Spain the lead.

Uruguay suffered another setback after Manuel Ugarte departed with what appeared to be a serious injury before the interval. Coach Marcelo Bielsa replaced Muslera at half-time with Sergio Rochet and later withdrew captain Federico Valverde, but the changes failed to spark a comeback.

Spain continued to look the more dangerous side after the break. Yamal produced another excellent run only for Mathias Olivera to deny Oyarzabal a simple finish, while substitute Ferran Torres struck the crossbar late on after racing clear.

Uruguay's frustration summed up their campaign when Agustin Canobbio was sent off in stoppage time. The defeat left La Celeste third in the group with two points, while Spain advanced as group winners and will face either Austria or Algeria in the Round of 32.
