'He's done an incredible job' - Carrick praises Arsenal boss Arteta despite Man Utd rivalry

Michael Carrick has praised Mikel Arteta for building a successful team at Arsenal but admitted that the Spaniard's achievements are difficult to celebrate because of Manchester United's historic rivalry with the Gunners.

Arteta recently signed a new long-term contract at Arsenal, extending his stay at the club and strengthening his position as the longest-serving manager in the top four divisions of English football.

Carrick believes Arteta's progress is another example of what managers can achieve when they are given time to establish their ideas and build a team.

"It pains me to say, but the one that won the league in our country last season (Arteta) has been there for a long period of time," Carrick said on Monday.

"It's seven years and the first two seasons were - correct me if I'm wrong - eighth, seventh or eighth. I think he's done an incredible job, Mikel, and that's another example."

Arteta's early seasons at Arsenal were challenging, but the club's decision to stick with him has allowed the manager to develop his squad and establish a clear playing identity.

Carrick compared that patience with the lengthy spells enjoyed by former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone, both of whom built teams capable of competing consistently at the highest level.

"We're talking about Sir Alex and Diego Simeone, who have gone on for a lot longer than that and have built something incredibly special at both football clubs," Carrick added.

However, the Manchester United coach stressed that there is no guarantee that every manager needs several years to achieve success. Much depends on the club, its circumstances and the progress made along the way.

"It doesn't always take time, it depends on the situation of how things go," he said.

"But ultimately, to get where you want to be and remain sustainable and consistent, it's going to take time to build that foundation. That's just the way it is."

Carrick's comments come as he prepares Manchester United for their Champions League match against Simeone's Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
