Guinea-Bissau unveil 'King Pele' stadium in tribute to Brazilian football great

The government of Guinea-Bissau has confirmed that the Estadio da Rocha in the country's second city will be renamed King Pele in honour of the Brazilian football great.

The stadium is the second African venue to be renamed in honour of Pele, following a request from FIFA's president Gianna Infantino fo all countries around the world.

A statement by the Guinea-Bissau government said: "As an expression of the public recognition of his status as the King of World Football, the Council of Ministers decided to name the regional stadium of Bafata 'King Pele'."

On Wednesday, Cape Verde's prime minister announced that the stadium in its capital city, Praia, would also be renamed the "Pele Stadium".

Pele passed away on 29 Decemeber at the age of 82 and is widely regarded as the greatest player to ever play football, winning three World Cups with Brazil.

Following his death, thousands of fans and football dignitaries gathered at the stadium of the Brazilian club Santos, where he had played from 1956 to 1974, to pay their respects.
