'Greatest thing you can experience' - Jonathan Tah excited for Germany's World Cup opener

Speaking from the DFB base camp in Winston-Salem, defender Jonathan Tah spoke openly about his excitement and belief in the squad, calling the tournament "the greatest thing you can experience as a footballer."

Tah was full of praise for his defensive partner Nico Schlotterbeck, highlighting both his personality and ability on the pitch. "He's an incredible central defender," Tah said. "Very extroverted, always has a witty remark, but also one of the best in Europe on the ball. His development over recent years has been impressive."

He also reflected on the influence of veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, with whom he has shared a dressing room at club level. "He has this special presence, an aura like no other," Tah said. "We grew up watching him on TV. You have huge respect for what he's achieved."

Looking ahead to the tournament conditions, Tah admitted the heat in the United States will be a challenge. "It's extremely hot, but complaining doesn't help. You have to accept it and find solutions."

Schlotterbeck, meanwhile, underlined the strength of Germany's defensive partnership, saying the duo "don't need to bow down to any centre-back pairing in the world" if they bring their best qualities together. He also confirmed he is fully fit after knee surgery, adding that he feels "completely ready" after a strong return season.

On the bigger picture, Schlotterbeck stressed the squad's mindset. Having been part of the 2022 World Cup, he said he now fully understands the scale of the tournament. "There's no overwhelming pressure. We know how good we are," he said.

Germany open their campaign in Group E against Curacao on Sunday before facing Ivory Coast and Ecuador next.
