The 49-year-old took charge of the Hammers in January, but has overseen a disappointing run of form, with just three wins from 14 matches since his appointment.
That poor spell has left West Ham teetering just above the Premier League relegation zone, in what many are calling the "worst of the rest" position.
The club's struggles have led to growing frustration among supporters, who had hoped for a stronger second half of the season under Potter's leadership.
A victory over Tottenham could go some way towards easing the pressure on Potter. West Ham fans particularly relish beating Spurs, their fierce London rivals, and Sunday's clash provides an ideal opportunity to lift spirits both in the stands and in the dressing room.
Tottenham themselves have endured a difficult domestic campaign, but still harbour hopes of European glory, with a place in the Europa League final still within reach.
Despite their inconsistencies, Spurs are likely to pose a significant threat to a West Ham side lacking in confidence and form.
For Potter, the stakes are high. Another defeat could deepen the club's crisis and raise further questions about his long-term future at the London Stadium. However, a morale-boosting win against Spurs might be just what's needed to turn the tide.
"Spurs have had a tough season in the Premier League, because of injuries and other reasons. That just shows that in this league, nothing's forgiven," said Potter.
"But, they've done well in Europe, and hopefully they can get the job done and get to the final.
"This is the most important game for us, because it's the next game. And then you add on the fact it's a London derby, and the added importance for our supporters.
"I feel for our supporters because they've had a tough year. That's the reality.
"They're frustrated, understandably so, and we want to try and give them something back."
