Ghana FA sack coach Otto Addo ahead of FIFA World Cup

The Ghana FA have announced the immediate departure of head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This follows the Black Stars' latest feat to Germany in an international friendly in Stuttgart on Monday evening, which was their fourth successive friendly defeat dating back to November last year.

Ghana last week suffered a harrowing 5-1 loss to Austria, while back to back friendlies in Asia saw them lose 2-0 and 1-0 to Japan and South Korea respectively a few months ago.

The GFA took the decision just over two months before the upcoming FIFA World Cup, where the West Africans have been pitted alongside England, Croatia and Panama in Group L.

"The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo effective immediately," read a statement from the association.

"The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.

"The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course."

Addo, who represented Ghana on 15 occassions between 1999 and 2006, was appointed as national team assistant coach in 2021 before being elevated to the head coach role for the 2022 FIFA World Cup on a short-term basis.

He returned to the helm in 2024, qualifying the four-time African champions to this year's World Cup, but has not enjoyed much success since then.
