Gavin Hunt reflects on teaming up with Ernst Middendorp

Durban City coach Gavin Hunt remains calm under the gaze of Ernst Middendorp, brushing off any notion of pressure under the new technical director.

Hunt was simultaneously appointed alongside the German mentor in different roles following City’s promotion back to the Betway Premiership.

The four-time league winner has previously expressed his readiness to work with an older former coach in the same position as Middendorp, who has been around the block in the PSL.

Hunt insists that he’s not looking over his shoulder, worried Middendorp could be angling for his job over the course of the season.

"Our partnership is in a good place. He has been working behind the scenes, trying to sort out the DDC setup, he's been trying to get some more players in, so it's all going just fine," said Hunt.

The KZN-based outfit have made several new signings, including Haashim Domingo, Thabo Nodada, Darren Keet, and Kyle Jurgens.

Hunt says he will play his part in getting them firing.

"You can control performances, but you cannot control results. We know how we want to play, but results determine your success in this league.

"The players are certainly up for it. It will be a big challenge for them, and I'll try and guide them through it," explained Hunt.

The coach explained that he had his own personal ambitions for City, but felt what has been reported as his mandate, which was to achieve more than just saving the league status, was unrealistic.

"If you read the media, the expectations are quite high. That said, we have our own ambitions to do well, and there will be many competitive matches this season in which the results could go either way."
