Frenkie de Jong's Barcelona contract extension close to being finalised

Barcelona are edging closer to securing Frenkie de Jong's future, with the Dutch midfielder expected to sign a new long-term deal in the coming weeks.

His current contract runs out at the end of the season, but negotiations have progressed quickly, and there is confidence from both sides that an agreement will soon be reached.

Reports in Spain have suggested Barcelona have offered De Jong a three-year extension that would keep him at the club until 2029.

The 28-year-old has consistently spoken of his wish to remain in Catalonia. "Barcelona are my home and I want to stay here," De Jong has said, reiterating his commitment to the club on several occasions.

Since the start of 2025, De Jong has been at the heart of Hansi Flick's side, forming a highly effective midfield partnership with Pedri. Their balance in possession and control without the ball have been widely praised, with many rating them among the best double pivots in Europe.

De Jong has also taken on more responsibility, regularly wearing the captain's armband in the absence of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and with Ronald Araujo struggling for form.

Barcelona have made a solid start to the new La Liga season, remaining unbeaten across their first five league fixtures. Flick has underlined De Jong's importance, saying: "Frenkie is a complete player who makes the team stronger in every phase of the game."

Elsewhere in midfield, the club have been dealt a fresh setback with Gavi, who picked up a new meniscus injury during training in August. The teenager is due to undergo knee surgery today and could be sidelined for five to six weeks, limiting Flick's options during a crucial period of the campaign.

For Barcelona, tying De Jong down to a new deal would represent a significant statement, ensuring that one of the world's leading midfielders continues to anchor their project.
