Flu hits Bayern Munich hard as Thomas Muller and Jonas Urbig sidelined

Bayern Munich face a potential selection headache ahead of their Bundesliga showdown with Mainz 05 on Saturday, with Thomas Muller and Jonas Urbig sidelined from Wednesday's training session due to illness.

The duo's absence, combined with ongoing injury concerns, has raised questions about the Bavarians' lineup for the crucial match.

According to reports from Bild, both Muller and Urbig were struck down by colds, leaving their availability for the weekend in doubt. "Thomas Muller and Jonas Urbig did not train with the team today due to a cold," Bild noted, highlighting the setback for the German giants.

Urbig, the 21-year-old goalkeeper, has been a standout performer in recent weeks, stepping up in the absence of veteran Manuel Neuer, who continues to recover from a calf injury. Neuer also skipped Wednesday's session, with the club managing his workload cautiously as he nears a return.

Should neither Urbig nor Neuer be fit to face Mainz, third-choice goalkeeper Daniel Peretz is poised to step in. "If neither Urbig nor Neuer is fit to play against Mainz, Daniel Peretz will likely start in goal," Bild reported, signaling a potential opportunity for the young shot-stopper.

Muller's absence from training is equally concerning for Bayern, who rely on the 35-year-old's experience and creativity in attack. The club legend, set to depart Bayern at the end of the season after a 25-year career, remains a pivotal figure. "Thomas Muller will end his incredible journey with Bayern Munich this summer," the club announced earlier, adding emotional weight to his potential absence against Mainz.

Despite the setbacks, Bayern received a boost with the return of midfielder Leon Goretzka to team training after a calf issue. "Leon Goretzka has resumed team training and should be ready for Mainz on Saturday," Bild confirmed, offering some optimism for manager Vincent Kompany.

Kompany, speaking recently about the team's resilience, emphasized their focus. "We've shown we can respond brilliantly even in tough situations," he said after a commanding 4-0 win over Heidenheim.

Bayern will need that grit if they are to maintain their six-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table against a Mainz side sitting fifth with 46 points from 28 matches.

With the clock ticking, Kompany and his staff will be hoping their stars can shake off the flu in time to face Mainz.
