Feud erupts between Spain and Barcelona over Lamine Yamal withdrawal

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) are upset after learning that Lamine Yamal underwent a groin procedure on the same day he was due to report for Spain's World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Turkey.

The 18-year-old Barcelona winger had a radiofrequency treatment for discomfort in his pubic area on November 10, but Spain's medical staff say they were not informed until that evening. The RFEF said it only received details in a late report recommending 7-10 days of rest, leading them to release Yamal from the squad and replace him with Jorge de Frutos.

"I've never experienced a situation like this," said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente. "You don't hear anything, and then you're told about a medical issue. It's surprising."

The incident deepens long-running tensions between Barcelona and the Spanish FA over Yamal's recurring groin injury. The teenager aggravated the same issue during September's international break, prompting Barça boss Hansi Flick to accuse Spain of "not taking care of the player." Yamal then missed several club games before another selection dispute arose in October.

De la Fuente has denied any personal rift but admitted communication has broken down:

"We should have been told before, not after. What's needed is good communication and shared information," he said.

Barcelona insist their medical team acted responsibly and in agreement with the player, prioritising his recovery. Flick reiterated: "He's improving, but the injury isn't over. We must all take care of him."

Spain, reigning Euro 2024 champions and leaders of Group E, will finish their qualifiers without one of their brightest young stars - and with renewed calls for better coordination between club and country over player welfare.
