Ethan Nwaneri ready for Dortmund adventure after Arsenal deadline-day switch

The highly-rated 19-year-old attacking midfielder officially completed a season-long move to Dortmund on September 1, joining the Bundesliga club from Arsenal in a straight loan deal with no option or obligation to buy.

Nwaneri made Premier League history at just 15 years and 181 days when he became the youngest player to appear in the competition. Arsenal continue to view him as an important part of their long-term plans, with the England Under-21 international under contract until 2030.

However, the opportunity to continue his development in Germany proved too good to turn down.

"As soon as I heard about BVB's interest and we had a meeting, everything moved very quickly," Nwaneri said.

"Within just a few hours, there were advanced talks going on behind the scenes. So, as soon as I found out they were interested, I was ready to make the move."

Dortmund have a strong reputation for developing young talent, and that history was another major attraction for Nwaneri.

"The fans, of course. Everyone's heard of them. That crazy stadium, with its history," he said.

"But also the players who've been here. Players who made a name for themselves here and then continued to develop elsewhere."

Nwaneri believes Dortmund can help him develop both as a footballer and as a person.

"They all grew here as people and as men. I think that's something great that sets our club apart," he added.

Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac moved quickly to bring Nwaneri into first-team training after new signing Giannis Konstantelias suffered a serious knee injury, increasing the need for attacking reinforcements.

The teenager also received encouragement from a familiar face before completing his move, with Dortmund midfielder Jobe Bellingham helping convince his England Under-21 team-mate that the move was the right one.

"I've spoken with Jobe over the last few days. He asked, 'What's going on with you?' And I told him I couldn't say for sure yet either," Nwaneri said.

"But we talked a lot. And he kept saying the whole time that I should come to BVB. I'm glad we'll be playing side by side now."

While Dortmund have secured Nwaneri for the season, Arsenal have protected their long-term investment in the youngster. The loan agreement includes a recall option that allows the Gunners to bring him back to North London from January 1, 2027.

That safeguard could prove important given Arsenal's own attacking options and their desire to keep Nwaneri firmly within their long-term plans.

Nwaneri will now look to make his mark in Germany as Dortmund prepare for their next Bundesliga fixture against Hoffenheim on Saturday at the SNP Arena in Sinsheim.
