Espanyol part ways with Manolo Gonzalez after shock Copa del Rey exit

Espanyol have parted ways with head coach Manolo Gonzalez following a shocking Copa del Rey exit against fourth-tier outfit Sestao River Club.

The Catalan club confirmed the manager's departure on Tuesday, with the board opting for an immediate change after a damaging 4-3 defeat that saw their side capitulate in extra time. The result sent shockwaves through Spanish football and ultimately sealed Gonzalez's fate.

Gonzalez had entered the cup tie facing mounting pressure, having admitted before kick-off that his position was in jeopardy. The manner of Espanyol's elimination proved decisive, making his dismissal increasingly difficult to avoid as the club sought a new direction.

Despite the disappointing end to his spell, Gonzalez had previously earned considerable goodwill from both supporters and the hierarchy. His work in keeping Espanyol competitive in La Liga had helped establish confidence in his leadership during a tenure marked by contrasting fortunes.

The Spaniard oversaw 107 official matches at the RCDE Stadium across several seasons, navigating various challenges during his time in charge.

In their official announcement, Espanyol acknowledged Gonzalez's dedication and commitment throughout his tenure, recognising the work he had undertaken amid the club's sporting challenges.

"RCD Espanyol have decided to bring Manolo Gonzalez's tenure as coach of the club to an end. The two parties part ways after more than three seasons and 107 official games in charge of the first team, a period during which he left his personal and professional mark, both on the pitch and in the team's day-to-day operations," that is the official statement from Espanyol.

"RCD Espanyol, on behalf of club president Alan Pace, and its Board of Directors, wish to express our gratitude to Manolo Gonzalez for the work, commitment, and effort he has shown since taking charge of the first team.

"The club particularly values the professionalism and dedication he brought to his role, as well as the way he tackled the various sporting challenges he faced. The club wish him the very best of luck and success in his future endeavours."
