Eric Garcia pushes for new Barcelona deal as contract talks progress

Barcelona defender Eric Garcia has confirmed that negotiations are underway with the Catalan giants over a new contract, as he looks to secure his long-term future at the club.

The 24-year-old's current deal is due to expire next summer, meaning he would be free to negotiate a pre-contract with foreign clubs from January. However, Garcia has made it clear that his priority is to remain at Barcelona.

"There are talks going on, and hopefully they will come to fruition as soon as possible," Garcia told SPORT. When asked if his only goal was to stay at the club, he simply replied: "Yes."

Garcia has been a consistent figure in Hansi Flick's side during the opening months of the 2025-26 campaign, making 10 appearances across all competitions and scoring once. Having come through Barcelona's academy before joining Manchester City in 2017, he returned to Camp Nou in 2021 and has since featured 123 times for the first team.

Barcelona sporting director Deco has also expressed his desire to see Garcia stay, praising the defender's resilience and professionalism. "The idea is to continue with him as long as he wants and understands the club's vision," Deco told Catalunya Radio. "We are happy with Eric. For me, he is an example of overcoming adversity; he left here amidst criticism, turned everything around, and is now an important player both on the pitch and in the dressing room.

"He is still young, and we want to renew his contract. We are talking, and the renewal will happen at the right time."

Garcia's situation comes at a time when Barcelona are managing several key contract decisions. Frenkie de Jong signed a new deal earlier this week, keeping him at Camp Nou until 2029, but Robert Lewandowski and Andreas Christensen both have contracts that expire next June.

Christensen is expected to depart on a free transfer after falling down the pecking order, while Lewandowski's future remains uncertain. The Polish striker's agent has said no decision has yet been made, but this season is widely expected to be his last in Barcelona colours.
