Enzo Maresca reveals Man City's team leaders, Enzo Fernandez left out

The Argentine midfielder arrived from Chelsea on deadline day for a club-record 125 million pound fee, signing a five-year contract after previously serving as captain at Stamford Bridge. However, his experience has not been enough to earn him a place among City's four designated leaders.

Maresca confirmed that Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma had already been selected for the hierarchy ahead of City's Premier League meeting with Coventry City.

Dias and Haaland provide a link to the Pep Guardiola era, while Guehi and Donnarumma are new additions under Maresca. The reshaped structure follows the departures of Rodri and Bernardo Silva and highlights the manager's willingness to hand senior responsibilities to recent arrivals.

Fernandez, a 2022 FIFA World Cup winner, previously said he had "always dreamed of being at a club as big as Man City" after completing his move.

Despite his pedigree and captaincy background, the 25-year-old will therefore need to establish himself within the squad before another opportunity to join City's leadership ranks emerges.

Even though he has not made the cut for the senior role, City are excited to have such an experienced and successful player joining their ranks.

"He is a winner and when you belong to a squad and another winning player arrives, they are always happy," said Maresca.

"I can promise you that in the last four or five days four or five players from the squad were asking if he is coming or not because they want him to be with us. It's very important that he is with us and we are 100 per cent happy with that."
