Deschamps wants 'sharper' France attacking display against confident Morocco

France coach Didier Deschamps has challenged his players to be more clinical in front of goal when they face Morocco in Thursday's 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final.

Les Bleus have scored a tournament-high 14 goals on their way to the last eight, but Deschamps believes there is still room for improvement despite boasting one of the strongest attacks in the competition.

"We have to be efficient, offensively speaking," Deschamps said ahead of the clash.

"In all the areas both teams have strong assets.

"We are efficient but we could have done better on this front. Sometimes you have six chances and score two goals and sometimes you have two chances and score twice. It is more important to be efficient."

The quarter-final is a repeat of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, when France ended Morocco's dream run in Qatar. However, Deschamps believes this Moroccan side is stronger and arrives as a genuine title contender rather than a surprise package.

France reached the last eight with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16, with captain Kylian Mbappe converting the winning penalty. Mbappe has now scored seven goals at the tournament, leaving him one behind Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

Supported by Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola, France have one of the most dangerous attacking units in the competition.

Morocco have impressed throughout the World Cup, finishing comfortably through the group stage before eliminating the Netherlands and co-hosts Canada to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Deschamps expects another difficult test.

"Morocco's profile is not the one of Paraguay. We met them four years ago in the semi-finals," he said.

"They played the Africa Cup of Nations final. They have top individuals. They are not here to play. They are here to win. We have to be ready and perform and deliver against this great team."

France are also monitoring the fitness of midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who is recovering from a muscle injury.

"He feels better but I left early from the hotel this morning. I cannot say more. He might take part in training today. All other players are available," Deschamps said.

Deschamps also confirmed that France's appeal to overturn Michael Olise's yellow card against Paraguay had been rejected, with FIFA informing the team that the booking will stand.
