Cucurella praises Spain's defensive strength as FIFA World Cup triumph sparks celebrations

Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the second period of extra time at MetLife Stadium, ending Argentina's resistance after they had been reduced to 10 men.

Luis de la Fuente's side completed one of the strongest defensive campaigns in World Cup history, conceding just once in eight matches. The only team to score against Spain during the tournament was Belgium in the quarter-finals.

Cucurella, who recently completed his move from Chelsea to Real Madrid, said Spain's defensive record was built on the commitment of the entire squad rather than just the back four.

"When you don't concede, I think it's much easier to win," Cucurella said.

"We've done an incredible job in that regard all tournament, and not just the defenders and the goalkeeper, because I think it's a team effort.

"Ultimately, it's about everyone making sacrifices. We attack together and defend together. That's one of the keys to this team."

Spain's disciplined performances throughout the tournament laid the foundation for their second World Cup title, adding to the trophy they won in South Africa in 2010.

After spending almost 50 days together during the tournament, Cucurella said the players could finally enjoy the rewards of their efforts.

"Now it's time to celebrate," he said.

"We came here with a goal, spent 50 days, or nearly 50, in camp, and now it's time to be together, enjoy every moment, reminisce, and above all, switch off.

"I think we deserve a good party."
