Bradley Barcola opened the scoring at the Parc des Princes after just 10 minutes.
Chelsea were level when Malo Gusto equalised with 28 minutes on the clock, but PSG regained their lead through Ousmane Dembele with five first-half minutes to play.
A 57th minute Enzo Fernandez effort restored parity a second time, until Vitinha's 74th minute goal, but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia came off the bench in the second half and added two more late strikes, for a comprehensive victory.
The result puts PSG into a strong position heading into Tuesday's second-leg but hands the Blues a mountain to climb if they are to progress to the competition quarter-finals.
Luis Enrique expressed his delight with the result but admitted the tie is not over.
Speaking afer the game, he said: "The result is very good, but there is still another match.
"As journalists, you always analyse the results, and this is natural and understandable. However, what I can say is that the team strives to continuously improve throughout the season.
In this tournament, we always try to play in our style, and we are accustomed to playing such matches because we have played similar games throughout the group stage.
"In the end, we had chances to win the match 5-2, but I repeat, there is another match. Am I afraid of the return leg? Coaches are always afraid; that's our mentality. We will strive to win the next match, but it will certainly be difficult and complicated."
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior added: "A very disappointing result on an evening where for much of the game we were really happy. The last 15 minutes were crazy.
"That's on me. We need to be better in moments when setbacks and mistakes happen. You need to stay calm in the moment, me included.
"Its a painful one because for 75 minutes we were in the tie."
"We've shot ourselves in the foot and made this tie very difficult," the coach added.
âEven at 4-2, it's not the best result but we're still right in this at nine. The fifth goal, that's the painful one. It's something I really have to solve. We are very close to be an outstanding team.â
