Unai Emery: Aston Villa can learn important lessons from Barcelona defeat

Unai Emery was left frustrated as Aston Villa's perfect start to their Champions League campaign came to an end with a 3-0 defeat against Barcelona at the Spotify Nou Camp.

The Villa manager watched his side fall short against the Spanish giants after arriving in Catalonia with three consecutive victories over Club Brugge, Fenerbahce and Viking.

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring after just seven minutes, punishing a costly mistake from Joao Gomes. Villa responded positively, however, and created several promising opportunities through Matty Cash, Gomes and Johan Manzambi. The latter fashioned two chances, but poor finishing prevented the visitors from making their attacking efforts count.

Raphinha effectively settled the contest by finding the net twice in quick succession after the interval. Leon Goretzka subsequently struck the post for Villa, while Yamal, Anthony Gordon and Joao Cancelo came close to extending Barcelona's advantage.

Emery, who celebrated his 55th birthday on Tuesday, punched the air in frustration as his team missed an opportunity to secure a positive result.

Nevertheless, the encounter provided an important assessment of Villa's progress under his four-year tenure, with the Europa League winners still having work to do before matching Europe's strongest sides.

"The test was definitely not in the level we want to achieve but there are a lot of things to learn, a lot of experience for the players and us," Emery said.

"It is giving me a lot of information to analyse and compete at this level.

"Overall, we are competing fantastically in the Champions League, although playing the match we played we have work to do to get to this level [of Barcelona].

"We were sometimes achieving it and close to scoring goals but we must be ruthless in the attacking third, 3-0 is maybe more than we deserved, but we accept the defeat."
