Chelsea sign defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta

Chelsea have handed Xabi Alonso his first signing as head coach after completing the 47 million pounds move for highly rated Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta.

The 21-year-old has signed a long-term contract until 2033, with the deal including an option for a further year, ending months of speculation over his future. Chelsea moved decisively to beat strong competition from Inter Milan, who had been close to agreeing a deal to bring the defender back to his boyhood club.

Palestra arrives at Stamford Bridge following a breakthrough campaign on loan at Cagliari, where he made 37 Serie A appearances, scoring once and providing four assists. His performances earned him Serie A Defender of the Season and a senior Italy debut during the World Cup play-offs.

"A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world," Palestra told the club's website. "I'm very excited to get started. I've felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me.

"We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can't wait to compete in the Premier League."

Palestra's rise has been rapid. Having featured for Atalanta's Under-23 side in Italy's third tier just three years ago, he made his senior debut in December 2023 before flourishing during his spell in Sardinia.

The Italian has built a reputation as one of Europe's most dynamic young defenders. According to Opta, he completed 70 successful dribbles last season - more than any defender across Europe's top 10 leagues - and attempted 73 runs of more than five metres, the highest figure among Serie A defenders. No player in the Italian top flight also covered more ground at sprinting speed.

Primarily a right-back or wing-back, Palestra can operate on either flank and has even played in central midfield earlier in his career. That versatility is thought to be a major reason behind Chelsea's pursuit, with Alonso expected to implement the 3-5-2 system that brought him success at Bayer Leverkusen.

Former Cagliari sporting director Guido Angelozzi believes Chelsea are signing a player ready for the highest level.

"The first thing that struck me was his maturity," Angelozzi said. "He is a very curious young man - always willing to listen, yet with a strong personality.

"Today he is a more complete, mature player and, above all, mentally ready to step up to an even higher level."

Cagliari head coach Fabio Pisacane was equally glowing in his assessment, describing Palestra as "a player built on the PlayStation" because of his exceptional athleticism.

Chelsea's business is unlikely to stop there. The Blues are prioritising the signing of another centre-back, with Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix among their leading targets, while moves for other reinforcements remain under consideration as Alonso reshapes his squad ahead of the new season.
