Carlo Ancelotti calls for calm as Brazil face Japan World Cup knockout battle

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has urged his players to stay calm under pressure as they prepare to face Japan in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32, describing the knockout clash as the team's "first final" of the tournament.

Brazil take on Japan at Houston Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Monday, knowing that defeat would end their World Cup campaign. Ancelotti acknowledged the challenge awaiting his side, especially after Japan claimed a 3-2 friendly victory over Brazil in October.

Speaking ahead of the match, the experienced Italian said his players must approach the contest with the right mentality.

"We'll need a very strong mentality, a lot of heart and clear ideas," Ancelotti said. "We have to be ready for anything that can happen in a knockout match, because in these games, anything really can happen."

Despite the high stakes, the Brazil coach believes his squad is well prepared after encouraging performances in their previous two matches.

"I believe the team is ready, motivated and confident. The last two matches went well, and we'll be prepared for any situation."

Ancelotti also stressed the importance of remaining focused instead of allowing the occasion to become overwhelming.

"In the end, it's still a football match, even if it's part of an extraordinary event like the World Cup," he said. "You have to know how to handle the pressure by staying focused on what needs to be done on the pitch."

He added that Brazil must perform well in every area of the game against a disciplined Japanese side.

"We'll have to take care of every aspect, both defensively and offensively, playing as a team. We're facing a strong, organised and quality opponent, so having clear ideas will be crucial."

Ancelotti believes Brazil's experienced squad can give them an important advantage in such a demanding fixture.

"Brazil has many very experienced players who know exactly how to prepare for and play in this kind of match. That's why I'm very confident," he said.

The Brazil manager also provided a positive update on Neymar, whose fitness has been one of the major talking points during the tournament.

"He's improving a lot, and in the last week he's made great progress," Ancelotti said. "It's a shame he couldn't train consistently from the start of the camp, but now he's able to work for longer periods and is in good condition."

However, Ancelotti stopped short of confirming whether the forward would feature against Japan.

"Whether he plays will depend on the context and how the match unfolds."
