The Portugal international edged Declan Rice in a tightly contested vote, becoming the first United player since Wayne Rooney in 2010 to receive the honour. Fernandes secured 45 per cent of the votes cast by football writers, finishing just 28 votes ahead of the Arsenal midfielder, while Erling Haaland placed third.
Fernandes' influence has been central to United's revival during a turbulent season that included the January departure of former coach Ruben Amorim and the arrival of interim boss Michael Carrick. Despite another campaign without silverware, United are on course for a third-place Premier League finish and a return to Europe's elite competition.
The 31-year-old has produced one of the finest individual seasons of his career, contributing eight league goals and 19 assists, while his overall tally across all competitions stands at 20 assists in 34 appearances. He now needs just one more assist in United's final three league games to equal the Premier League single-season record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Fernandes' latest accolade places him alongside some of the club's most iconic figures. He becomes the 10th United player to win the FWA prize, joining names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Roy Keane, Eric Cantona and Bobby Charlton.
His award-winning season has also silenced speculation surrounding his future at Old Trafford. Last year Fernandes rejected interest from the Saudi Pro League and other European clubs despite uncertainty over the club's direction. With his contract running until 2027, with an option for a further year, United are now expected to prioritise extending the stay of their captain after another influential campaign.
