United arrived buoyed by last weekend's win over Chelsea but were quickly dismantled by Brentford's direct approach.
Brazilian striker Igor Thiago struck twice inside the opening 20 minutes, exposing United's high defensive line with ruthless finishing.
Benjamin Sesko briefly gave United hope with his first goal for the club on 26 minutes, firing home at the third attempt. However, the visitors never built on that moment. Brentford controlled midfield through Jordan Henderson and Mikkel Damsgaard, while centre-backs Nathan Collins and Sepp van den Berg subdued Sesko for the remainder of the game.
Unitedâs best chance to level came in the second half when Bruno Fernandes won a penalty after Collins fouled Bryan Mbeumo.
But Fernandes, normally reliable from the spot, struck wide to the disbelief of the travelling support. Amorim later admitted: "When we create those moments, we have to take them. We cannot keep letting teams escape when we are given chances."
With United chasing the game, Brentford finished them off on the counter. Substitute Mathias Jensen drilled home a precise shot past Altay Bayindir, who had otherwise been one of Unitedâs better performers.
Referee Craig Pawsonâs decision not to dismiss Collins for the penalty incident drew debate, but Amorimâs side could have few complaints. Manuel Ugarte, Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw all struggled to impose themselves, and late substitutions had little effect.
Brentford manager Keith Andrews praised his teamâs intensity, saying: "We were brave from the start and punished their mistakes. Igorâs goals set the tone."
It marked the second successive season Brentford have beaten United at home, underlining the scale of Amorimâs task. Brentford, meanwhile, continue to thrive at home, showing the confidence that United are sorely lacking.
