BREAKING: SAFA in talks to move Senegal match date over Election Day

SABC Sport has learnt that SAFA are currently in talks with their counterparts from Senegal to move the first international friendly match from Friday, 31 May to Saturday, 1 June 2024.

This is to accommodate members of the Banyana Banyana squad to vote in the upcoming national elections, scheduled to be held on Wednesday, 29 May 2024.

South Africa announced last week that the African Champions have secured two games against the West Africans, but it has now emerged that the departure dates clash with the voting.

Banyana were initially scheduled to assemble for camp on Monday, 27 May and depart the next day for Senegal, but this appears likely to be delayed as players and staff members need to visit the polling stations.

SABC Sport has it on good authority that SAFA are doing everything in their power to ensure the team gets to exercise their right to vote, with limited disruption to travel logistics to West Africa.

The team is now expected to fly out on the evening of Election Day, arriving in Senegal the next day, and perhaps having one more training session before playing their first match on Saturday, 1 May.

For now, the second friendly international remains on schedule for 4 June.
