The trio, valued at a combined 40 million euros according to Transfermarkt, could depart as free agents in June 2026 if no new deals are secured.
Sporting director Lars Ricken has adopted a daring strategy, opting to delay contract talks for the three stars and head coach Niko Kovac, whose contract also expires next summer.
"We will start the season with this lineup and see how things develop," Ricken said. "Then we will see how the future looks as the season progresses."
Despite occasional fan criticism, particularly aimed at Brandt for his inconsistent form last season, Ricken remains supportive. "There is definitely appreciation for these players," he said, acknowledging their value after a strong finish to the 2024/25 campaign.
Can, the club captain, has been a versatile asset, often slotting into central defense, while Sule has shown signs of rediscovering his best form under Kovac's guidance.
Kovac, appointed in February when Dortmund were languishing in 11th place, transformed their fortunes, securing a fourth-placed finish and Champions League qualification.
Ricken praised the coach's impact, saying, "He's honest, straightforward, and doesn't let himself be swayed. It quickly became clear he's not just a firefighter but someone who can develop a team." Kovac's faith in Sule, in particular, has sparked a revival, with the defender earning praise for his pace and vision. "When he's fit, he's one of Germany's best central defenders," Kovac said.
However, Ricken's cautious approach to transfers has raised eyebrows. Dortmund have only added Jobe Bellingham and Patrick Drewes this summer, while making Yan Couto and Daniel Svensson's loan deals permanent. "We have a good 35 days left and know exactly how and with whom we want to strengthen," Ricken said, addressing transfer speculation on X.
On X, Ricken emphasized the trio's importance, stating, "All three showed their value to our team in the final phase of last season."
With Dortmund preparing for a demanding season across the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Champions League, Ricken's gamble on delaying contract decisions could either spark a motivated squad response or lead to uncertainty. The coming months will be crucial as Dortmund balance squad stability with their lofty ambitions.
