Behind the improved fielding of youthful talent in the PSL - Dillon Sheppard

There’s been a huge improvement in the fielding of youth talent in the Dstv Premiership this season especially teenagers and Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Dillon Sheppard says credit should go to coaches.

In previous seasons, Premier Soccer League (PSL) coaches have come under fire for not fielding young players, especially those U21 but this season, it’s been a different case altogether.

Sheppard, a former youth coach at the now-defunct Bidvest Wits says coaches need to create a good environment for young players to thrive.

"I think one of the most important things is creating the right environment for youngsters to thrive. Then striking the balance of having good, experienced players around them who can guide them through the process. Having a training space where they feel comfortable then when the opportunity comes, they will perform," he said.

Chiefs has been consistent in the fielding of Mduduzi Shabalala (18), Wandile Duba (19), and Samkelo Zwane (21) in their team this season. And they still have more players from the juniors training with the senior team. Sheppard emphasizes the importance of patience.

"If you look at the start of Mdu in the first couple of games, we could have easily said in one or two games that maybe he still needs time to grow. But look at how he's improved from where he started to where he is now. Hopefully we can give more opportunities," he concluded.
