Bayern Munich mount epic late comeback to maintain Bundesliga lead

Bayern Munich recovered from two goals down with three strikes after the 80th minute to claim a dramatic 3-2 win over SC Freiburg at Europa Park Stadion in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The win sees the Bavarians maintain their nine-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings after second-placed Borussia Dortmund beat VfB Stuttgart.

After a frenetic first half dominated by Bayern, Freiburg burst out of the blocks in the second period and grabbed the lead through a lovely long-range effort by Johan Manzambi less than a minute after the restart.

After being thwarted on several occasions by 40-year-old Manuel Neuer, Freiburg were eventually able to double their advantage in the 71st minute when Lucas Hoeler hit a thunderous volley past Neuer.

Bayern fought back after the second goal but struggled to find a breakthrough.

However, with less than 10 minutes of regular time left - just when it seemed as if Freiburg would be able to hang on to an unlikely win - Tom Bischof thumped the ball into the back of the net from just outside the area to give the visitors hope.

His second, two minutes into stoppage time, was a virtual carbon copy of the first to pull Bayern level.

After another seven minutes, an incredible nine minutes of stoppage time, Lennart Karl found himself wide open inside the six-yard box and able to tap in a cross with what was just about the last kick of the game to secure a stunning comeback win for Bayern Munich.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga on Saturday, Dortmund were able to keep pace with Bayern thanks to a 2-0 win over Stuttgart at MHP Arena.

Like Bayern, Dortmund also left it late with both the strikes by Karim Adeyemi (90'+4) and Julian Brandt (90'+6) coming in stoppage time at the end of the game.

RB Leipzig took full advantage of Stuttgart's defeat by beating Werder Bremen 2-1 at Weserstadion to move up to third place in the league.

They took the lead through Antonio Nusa in the 15th minute, with Romulo doubling their advantage in the 51st minute before Salim Musah was able to grab a late consolation goal.

A brace from Phillip Tietz was enough to hand Mainz a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim at the ProZero Arena.

His two goals in the 13th and 79th minutes sandwiched a 23rd strike by Fisnik Asllani.

Ten-man HSV were able to hang on to a 1-1 draw against Augsburg, with Arthur Chaves (22') and Ransford Yeboah Konigsdorffer (60') getting the goals before Miro Muheim was sent off for a rash challenge in the 64th minute.

Borussia Monchengladbach and Heidenheim drew 2-2 at Borussia Park after an exciting back-and-forth encounter.

Wael Mohya gave the home side the lead in the 16th minute before Patrick Mainka pulled Heidenheim level 10 minutes later.

The visitors then went ahead through a Marnon Busch strike in the 63rd minute but Frnack Honorat was able to rescue a point for Monchengladbach with his 74th-minute goal.

BayArena witnessed a goal-fest with Bayer Leverkusen beating Wolfsburg 6-3 in the most action-packed match of the weekend.

Jonas Wind opened the scoring for the visitors in the 16th minute before Alejandro Grimaldo got the hosts back on level terms from the penalty spot in the 30th minute.

Less than 60 seconds later, though, Wolfsburg were back in front courtesy of Joakim Maehle.

The away side then moved into an even more commanding position when Christian Eriksen slotted a 38th-minute penalty to put them 3-1 ahead.

However, after that it was all Leverkusen, who scored five unanswered goals through Grimaldo (44'), Patrick Schick (53' pen), Edmond Tapsoba (68'), Ibrahim Maza (73') and Malik Tillman (90+6') to complete a dramatic turnaround and claim a thrilling 6-3 win.
