Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny accepts backup role as Joan Garcia takes charge

Wojciech Szczesny has made it clear that he is more than happy to serve as Barcelona's backup goalkeeper this season, with Joan Garcia firmly established as first choice.

The 35-year-old was brought out of retirement last year when Barcelona faced a crisis after Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a serious knee injury. Szczesny stepped in on a free transfer and quickly became number one, helping Hansi Flick's side to a remarkable treble in his debut campaign. His form was rewarded with a contract extension until 2027.

This summer, Barcelona strengthened further by signing Garcia from Espanyol for a reported twenty-five million euros. The young Spaniard had impressed last season as one of La Liga's busiest and most consistent goalkeepers. Since his arrival at Camp Nou, Garcia has started every game, including a dream debut in a 3-0 win away to Mallorca.

Szczesny, who has not yet featured this season, knows his role is now to guide and support the 24-year-old. Speaking after Barcelona's 2-1 Champions League victory at Newcastle United on Thursday night, where Marcus Rashford scored both goals, Szczesny underlined his position in the squad.

"I'm a backup and, barring any surprises, I will remain so. My role this season is to prepare Joan Garcia as best I can for the matches," he told Canal+.

"I think he's a goalkeeper with incredible potential, who is already among the best in Europe. I'm very proud to play this role; I prepared for it when I signed my new contract, and I'm not disappointed. Joan lacks experience at the highest level and that's something he needs to work on. I'll try to help him maintain a consistent level throughout the season."

Barcelona's decision to manage the transition carefully between Garcia, Ter Stegen, and Szczesny has been vital. While Garcia brings energy and long-term potential, Szczesny offers leadership and calm experience. Together, they give Flick the depth required for another demanding season at home and in Europe.
