Appollis drawing on past AFCON experience to shine in the current edition

At the previous Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Oswin Appollis played just eight minutes of football in all six matches Bafana Bafana played, and now he’s returned to be a starter and scorer in the same competition.

The experience from Côte d’Ivoire almost two years ago was evident in his finishing during the 2-1 win over Angola in the opening Group B game in Marrakech yesterday.

Appollis says the few minutes he got against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the bronze medal match are coming in handy now...

"Getting those few minutes helped me, I felt the level at that time and it has not changed, it's very tough you know.

"We managed to get the three points and that's the most important."

Appollis was also full of compliments for his Orlando Pirates teammate, Tshepang Moremi, who came on and changed the game after halftime, had his goal disallowed by VAR, then supplied an assist to Lyle Foster...

"At training, the guys have been working really hard, so it doesn't matter who coach calls on because everyone is top quality and ready to go."

Appollis showed some composure in taking that goal, and this is the continuation of the development he’s been having in his game since he joined Orlando Pirates from Polokwane City, at the beginning of this season.

In Côte d’Ivoire, Bafana lost the opening game 2-0 to Mali, but they have since learned from their previous mistakes and yesterday ensured that they got the maximum points.

Appollis says this is all down to the good work of head coach Hugo Broos.
