AmaZulu set to sign Taariq Fielies from Cape Town City on a three-year deal

Cape Town City will be one high-profile defender short with SABC Sport informed Taariq Fielies is leaving the club to join DStv Premiership rivals AmaZulu on a three-year deal before Friday’s deadline.

The 31-year-old has in the past been linked with a move to Gauteng following enquiries from Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at one stage, but with nothing materialising.

Fielies has been the core of the City team since joining them from Milano United in the lower division, but his absence so far this season has raised some eyebrows having just started one game in all competitions.

He is now set to move to Durban this week, with the discussions expected to be concluded in Johannesburg to avoid any delays.

The public broadcaster understands Fielies, whose contract with the Citizens was meant to run until June 2025 has been sold.

It’s a complete U-turn from the player being an integral part of coach Eric Tinkler’s squad to where things are as it stands.

According to information gathered by SABC Sport, there was no interest from the previous suitors in Chiefs, Pirates and Downs as all three moved on from pursuing the highly-rated defender.

Fielies has also dropped off the Bafana Bafana radar with his lack of game time as coach Hugo Broos prepares to name his final squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast next year.

City have also started the season poorly, winning two of their six DStv Premiership fixtures and sitting third from the bottom of the table.

They face TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit tonight and Fielies has not made the trip along with the squad in anticipation of his departure.
