Aliou Cisse downbeat after Senegal exit

Aliou Cisse was left wondering what might have been following Senegal's disappointing Africa Cup of Nations exit.

Cisse oversaw Senegal's 2021 AFCON triumph that saw them beat Egypt on penalties.

He also led his team to the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup.

They headed to the Ivory Coast as one of the favourites and lived up to their billing by ending as winners of Group C with maximum points following victories against Cameroon, Guinea and Gambia.

But they were then held to a 1-1 draw with Ivory Coast before losing 5-4 on penalties to see their AFCON hopes dashed.

Reflecting on his side's tournament, Cisse said on ZamFoot: "In defeat, we keep our dignity.

"We stopped playing after our goal - that's the regret.

"We will see what the future has in store for us. I want to digest this defeat because everyone is disappointed.

"There will surely be discussions with my federation but my future does not matter at the moment. What matters is Senegal."
