Alejandro Balde out again as hamstring woes hit Barcelona

Barcelona have been dealt another injury blow as left-back Alejandro Balde sustained a hamstring injury during training on Wednesday.

The club confirmed in an official medical report that the 21-year-old suffered a "slight" strain to his left hamstring, adding that his availability will depend on how he recovers.

"Defender Alejandro Balde suffered a slight injury to his left hamstring during today's training session. His availability will depend on how he progresses," Barcelona said.

This marks the second time in six months that Balde has injured the same muscle. He previously suffered a hamstring issue in April during the victory over Leganes, following a tear earlier in January 2024 against Athletic Club at San Mames.

Spanish journalist Helena Condis has reported that Balde is likely to be sidelined for around three weeks. If this holds, he will miss La Liga fixtures against Valencia, Getafe, and potentially Real Oviedo, as well as Barcelona's opening Champions League game against Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Balde's absence comes as Gerard Martin has returned to the first team, having been registered with La Liga just ahead of last weekend's 1-1 draw at Rayo Vallecano. Martin is expected to start in upcoming matches, though teenager Jofre Torrents, who impressed during pre-season, could also feature under Hansi Flick.

While a three-week absence is manageable, Barcelona will be concerned about the recurring nature of Balde's hamstring problems. The club's medical staff are likely to review his rehabilitation and training regime to prevent further setbacks, as the left-back remains a key figure in Flick's defensive plans.
