Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns set to renew rivalry in Cairo

Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns will face each other in Cairo on Saturday night in the group phase of the CAF Champions League.

These two clubs have been drawn together in the group phase of the continent™s top club competition for the second successive season.

Sundowns have started off with six points from their opening two Group B matches, while Al Ahly have been slower in their opening games due to the postponement of their first game but they lost 1-0 to Al-Hilal in their first match on 18 February.

However, they will be a dangerous team for Sundowns to contend with, particularly because they will play in their home ground, the Cairo International Stadium.

This is the 13th time that the two clubs will meet (Downs winning three times with four draws and five Ahly wins), with Percy Tau, the Bafana Bafana international and former Sundowns player, leading Ahly's team.

He has recently returned from injury and is looking to make a significant impact in this game. Tau has established himself as an important part of the Ahly side.

His presence on the field will surely add intrigue, particularly because he has faced the Brazilians before, and is very familiar with their style.

Adding to the drama is the fact that there has been talk that Tau may return to Sundowns in the last two transfer windows, which could happen at the end of the season.

Tau has managed only two Egyptian Premier League starts this season, but he is now fully fit and motivated to make an impact in the game against his former club.

Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has stated that his club is focused on the process rather than the log as they prepare to face Ahly.

Onyango said, "We want to win all of the group games to give us momentum heading into the quarter-finals. It is important for us to stay focused on the aim which is to qualify for the quarter-finals."

This game will be a spectacle, as two African football giants battle it out for dominance. Ahly does have an impressive record in continental competitions, but Sundowns will be hoping to gain a win to maintain their momentum.

With Tau leading the Ahly side, the Sundowns defence will have to be alert and focused, as they seek to secure a vital win away from home.
