Aaron Ramsdale the hero as Newcastle outlast Bournemouth in FA Cup penalty thriller

Aaron Ramsdale proved decisive as Newcastle United edged past Bournemouth on penalties after a breathless 3-3 draw in their FA Cup third-round tie at St James' Park.

The goalkeeper saved three spot-kicks in the shootout, denying Evanilson, Alex Jimenez and finally Bafode Diakite, as Newcastle prevailed 7-6 to reach the fourth round. Malick Thiaw had earlier put the hosts ahead in sudden death before Ramsdale's final save sparked celebrations.

After a cagey first half, Newcastle broke through early in the second period when Nick Woltemade's through ball sent Harvey Barnes clear and the winger finished for his 10th goal of the season. Bournemouth hit back quickly, Alex Scott tapping in at the back post before David Brooks curled in a superb strike from distance to turn the tie around.

Newcastle rescued the game deep into stoppage time when Djordje Petrovic fouled Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon converted the resulting penalty to force extra time. Barnes appeared to have won it with his second goal in the 118th minute, only for Bournemouth substitute Marcus Tavernier to equalise in the 122nd minute and take the contest to penalties.

Ramsdale then emerged as the hero, sealing progression for Eddie Howe's side in a classic FA Cup encounter that swung repeatedly from start to finish.
