Kwagga Smith's Japan exit confirmed as Springbok star nears Bulls return

Springbok loose forward Kwagga Smith's departure from Japanese club Shizuoka Blue Revs has been confirmed, with the 32-year-old strongly linked with a return to South Africa to join the Bulls.

The Blue Revs announced on Tuesday that Smith would leave the club after an eight-year stint, fuelling speculation that he is closing in on a move back home.

Negotiations between Smith and the Bulls are reportedly at an advanced stage, following coach Johan Ackermann's confirmation last month that the Pretoria side were interested in signing the Bok star, as well as fellow World Cup winner Malcolm Marx, who also plays his club rugby in Japan.

Smith joined Yamaha Jubilo, as the Blue Revs were known at the time, in 2018 and established himself as one of the leading foreign players in Japanese rugby.

He made 78 appearances across competitions, earned five selections in the Top League/League One Team of the Season and was named League One Player of the Season in 2022-23.

The Blue Revs paid tribute to his significant impact on the club in announcing his departure.

"With 63 Test caps for South Africa, Smith brought a wealth of experience and an impressive track record to the team. He consistently led by example and served as a role model for his teammates.

"Smith has played an important role in shaping the club's history and is widely recognised as one of the league's outstanding players and most influential contributors.

"Everyone at the club would like to express their deepest respect and gratitude for his achievements and contributions over the years, and we sincerely wish him continued success in the future."
