Joburg Super Kings coach explains Faf du Plessis’ re-signing at SA20 auction

Joburg Super Kings coach Albie Morkel says they always planned to get former captain Faf du Plessis back at the recent SA20 auction, having released him just two months ago ahead of Season 5.

du Plessis was at the centre of a fierce bidding battle between JSK and MI Cape Town for the former South Africa international, who ended up heading back to the Wanderers for R2.7 million.

"That happened a little bit before I knew I was going to get the job, but we were always going to get Faf back considering his elite level domestic performances and his displays in T20 cricket around the world, and he is still one of the fittest players I know."

Having captained JSK for all of the four seasons of the competition so far, Morkel could not commit to du Plessis returning in that capacity, highlighting the different options they have in the team’s leadership.

"We've got quite a few captains in our setup, there's the likes of Faf, and James Vince, as well as one or two others. We are yet to decide."

At 42 du Plessis comes with a lot of experience, and SA20 Commissioner Graeme Smith also praised his former Proteas teammate for maintaining his fitness with different T20 leagues around the world.

He, like many others, believe du Plessis is a perfect role model whose professionalism can be followed by younger cricketers.
