France prop Mohamed Haouas sentenced to additional nine months in prison

Disgraced France prop Mohamed Haouas could be incarcerated for over a year after being found guilty of "aggravated violence" committed in 2014.

This comes just a month after he was handed a one-year jail sentence after being found guilty of domestic abuse.

According to Haouas' lawyer, Marc Gallix, this new conviction makes it possible for imprisonment. Gallix has also confirmed that Haouas will appeal the decision.

This is the third case this year after his trial for a series of robberies, his domestic violence case and now the so-called 'bakery case' from 2014.

The front-rower was sentenced to 18 months in prison, including nine months of probation for his latest case. The incident occurred after a night out celebrating the new year.

He stopped at a bakery with a dozen friends where a brawl broke out between them and the father of the girl who Haouas was accused of verbally abusing with vulgar remarks and crude gestures.

In video footage shown in court, he is seen entering the shop with an iron bar, which he used as a weapon, to chase the young girl and her father.

Haouas was arrested earlier this month for hitting his wife after seeing her smoking. He revealed that she had told him she had stopped.

"She has the right to smoke but the problem is that she lied to me," he told the court.

"I said to myself that if she can lie about the cigarette, she could lie about other things."

The 30-year-old left Montpellier at the end of the 2022/23 season and was set to join Top 14 rivals Clermont.

Following his sentencing for domestic abuse, Clermont looked to cancel his contract but were unsuccessful in their attempt.

However, his latest sentencing is good news for his future potential employers because if he is incarcerated, Haouas will be in breach of his contract, and it will be cancelled.

Earlier this month, France head coach Fabien Galthie confirmed that the prop would not be considered for the Rugby World Cup.

"I called him," Galthie said. "I listened to him and told him that he would not be selected. He replied that he understood and apologised to the players and the staff."

When asked whether the prop's absence would extend beyond the Rugby World Cup, Galthie responded: "The competition we are interested in is the World Cup.

"I didn't survey my players (about the decision), but we exchanged a lot, yes. What they said, I will keep to myself. But what is happening to Momo Haouas is not good news for him or for us."
