Former Blitzbok JC Pretorius extends stay with the Lions

The Lions have confirmed that JC Pretorius has extended his contract and is on the cusp of making his return from injury.

The former Sevens star has been on the sidelines since suffering a serious knee injury in the Lions' win over the Scarlets in the United Rugby Championship at home back in October.

On Wednesday, the Johannesburg franchise's social media revealed that Pretorious has recommitted his future to the club he first joined in 2023 after three solid seasons with the Blitzboks.

Now, the dynamic flanker was spotted participating in full training drills, fueling rumours that this weekend's titanic clash against URC table-toppers Glasgow may be the stage of his long-awaited return.

Lions assistant coach Ricardo Loubscher did nothing to squash those rumours.

"He can't wait to get going," said a smiling Loubscher.

"We will see what is needed on the day regarding Pretorius' selection. As coaches, it is a discussion between us. It is good to have him back. He is ready to go, he is ready to go."

The Lions, who are fifth in the standings, face a tricky run into the URC playoffs, hosting Glasgow and Connacht before a trip north to Irish giants Leinster and Munster.
