Double World Cup winner Lukhanyo Am ends Sharks journey for pastures new

The Sharks have announced the departure of Springbok centre Lukhanyo Am, adding that he is heading to Japan.

Japan League One club Mitsubishi Dynaboars teased the signing with a short clip of Am early on Wednesday morning. Later, the Sharks confirmed the deal with a heartfelt post on social media.

"A leader. A Springbok. A Shark through and through," it read.

"With over 100 caps to his name, we say thank you to Lukhanyo Am for his years of dedication, leadership, and excellence in the black and white.

"You've left an indelible mark on this club, both on and off the field. Wishing you every success as you embark on your next chapter in Japan."

It is not Am's first stint in Japan. In 2022, he ran out for the Kobe Steelers to score three tries in six games while on loan from the Sharks.

The 31-year-old is currently on the standby list for the Springboks' end-of-year squad. He last featured in the green and gold in their wins over Scotland and England up north in 2024.

A string of injuries has plagued the talented outside centre, who was once considered the best player in the world during his incredible 2021/2022 season.
