Currie Cup: Lions overcome Griffons, Cheetahs devour Bulls

The Golden Lions came from behind to beat the Griffons in the Currie Cup on Friday, while the Free State Cheetahs dominated the Blue Bulls.

Golden Lions 41-26 Griffons

The Lions overcame poor discipline to record their first Currie Cup win of the season, defeating the Griffons 41-26 at Ellis Park on Friday.

The visitors opened the scoring with a try and penalty, but the Lions responded with a try of their own.

However, the Griffons capitalized on yellow cards to stretch their lead to 23-12 at half-time.

The Lions fought back in the second half, scoring four tries, including a hat-trick from scrumhalf Nico Steyn, to secure the victory.

The win was sealed with a penalty in the 80th minute by Tiaan Swanepoel.

Free State Cheetahs 32-7 Blue Bulls

The Blue Bulls lost 32-7 to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, making it their 10th defeat in 12 matches across all competitions.

The Pretoria franchise struggled due to their lack of experience and organisation.

The Cheetahs' superior cohesion and brute force resulted in a five-try bonus-point triumph.

Despite scoring a try in the first half, the Bulls made too many errors, and their efforts were in vain.

The Cheetahs' pack did the hard yards, with hooker Marnus van der Merwe making vital metres, and Siba Qoma secured the bonus point.

Pumas 28-13 Griquas

The Pumas claimed a 28-13 victory over Griquas in a repeat of last year's Currie Cup Final.

Griquas started strong, but the Pumas had too much firepower, with tries from Etienne Taljaard and Brandon Thomson.

Griquas' Carl Els and the Pumas' Andre Fouche both scored, but the Pumas sealed the win with a scrum penalty and a team try.

The Man of the Match was awarded to Pumas' Andre Fouche, who had a good all-round game and scored an excellent try at the end.
