Currie Cup: Lions and Bulls kick off 2025 campaign with impressive victories

The Lions thrashed the Sharks at Ellis Park while the Bulls were impressive in beating Western Province at DHL Stadium in Currie Cup action played on Saturday.

Lions thrash Sharks at Ellis Park

The Lions kicked off their 2025 Currie Cup campaign in style after thumping the Sharks 46-5 at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The home side scored seven tries in total and were running away with the encounter by halftime with a 24-0 lead at the break.

The Lions raced into a 10-0 lead through tries by flanker Jarod Cairns and winger Rabz Maxwane while a penalty try was also awarded in the first half.

Maxwane completed his brace, and the Lions' fourth as the hosts took a healthy lead into the interval.

Blitzbok Angelo Davids, on debut for the Lions, got himself a try before Sharks finally were on board thanks to a try by Phiko Sobahle.

Rynhardt Jonker and Layton Horn then dotted down for the Lions in quick succession before the full-time whistle to complete the rout.

Bulls start campaign with win over WP in Cape Town

The Bulls made good start to this season's Currie Cup campaign with a 48-23 victory against Western Province at the DHL Stadium.

The visitors scored six tries in total while Boeta Chamberlain had excellent game with the boot, converting all his team's five-pointers in the encounter.

The Bulls did the majority of their scoring in a dominant in which they into the interval with a 38-16 lead.

Western Province showed glimpses of what they could be capable of for the remainder of the season with Blitzboks stars Shilton van Wyk, Tristan Leyds and captain Zain Davids exciting to watch.
