Bulls survive Munster fightback to edge high-scoring URC thriller at Loftus

The Bulls held off a fierce late fightback from Munster to secure a dramatic 34-31 victory in their United Rugby Championship clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

In a match that swung wildly in momentum, the Bulls looked to have done enough after Handré Pollard stretched their lead to eight points late on, but Munster pushed them all the way to the final whistle in a frantic finish.

Munster struck first through Sean O'Brien, who finished off a move out wide after the visitors dominated early possession. Jack Crowley added the conversion to give Munster a 7-0 lead.

The Bulls responded through scrumhalf Embrose Papier, who produced a moment of individual brilliance to dart through the defence and score under the posts, with Pollard levelling the scores soon after. The hosts then moved ahead when Canan Moodie finished a slick attacking move, giving the Bulls a 14-7 halftime advantage.

Munster came out firing after the break, with Thomas Ahern crossing early in the second half after a sharp break to cut the deficit. Although Jack Crowley missed the conversion, the visitors had their tails up.

However, the Bulls responded almost immediately, with Embrose Papier grabbing his second try of the match after chasing down a loose ball deep in Munster territory. Handré Pollard added the extras to restore breathing room for the hosts.

The match continued to ebb and flow as Ahern's second effort and a successful kick from Crowley brought Munster back within striking distance. However, the Bulls responded again, with replacement Cheswill Jooste producing a superb solo try shortly after coming on to push the hosts further ahead.

Pollard's boot proved crucial, as he slotted multiple kicks - including a long-range penalty from near halfway - to keep the scoreboard ticking for the Bulls.

Munster refused to go away, with Ben O'Connor slicing through the defence for a try before Edogbo powered over late to set up a grandstand finish. Crowley's missed conversion after the final try ultimately proved costly, leaving Munster three points short.

In the closing stages, the Bulls showed composure, with Willie le Roux producing a crucial clearance to pin Munster deep, allowing the hosts to see out the result.
